Win The Moment: How I Beat Procrastination to Finish MATERNAL2

Let me tell you—it took everything in me to finish this sequel. After five long years of struggling to wrap up Maternal2, I had to get real with myself. Life was coming at me fast with raising a teenager, coaching cheer, and trying to not put myself on the backburner in the process. But I realized that if I was ever going to finish this book, I had to stop waiting for some magical block of free time and start winning each moment.

So, how did I do it? I broke it down into little moments of intention.

First, I stopped waiting to feel “inspired.” Inspiration is great, but it can also be a fickle thing. I set a goal to write just 10 minutes a day—even if it wasn’t my best work. Showing up regularly made those small moments add up.

Second, I learned to protect my focus. Instead of letting distractions win, I turned my phone on ‘Do Not Disturb’ during my writing time. I had to remember that every notification wasn’t an emergency. That boundary gave me back precious time.

Third, I gave myself permission to take breaks but not to quit. On days when writing felt impossible, I would step away, light a candle, and journal out what was blocking me. Most times, I wasn’t uninspired—I was just overwhelmed.

Finishing this sequel didn’t come down to motivation or even discipline; it came down to reclaiming those little moments and making them work for me. If you’re struggling to finish a project, give yourself grace but also a plan. Win each moment, and watch those victories build up over time.

Now tell me, what’s been your biggest struggle with procrastination, and how have you dealt with it? Drop a comment and let’s encourage each other!
